Godoy Cruz – Sarmiento

Godoy Cruz fans will have felt frustrated after the team’s 1-1 home stalemate against bottom-placed CA Central Cordoba as they played against ten men since the 25th minute. However, El Tomba also made it five league games unbeaten (three victories and two draws) to accumulate 17 points in the Liga Profesional (with one game in hand), which allows them to climb into the Copa Libertadores’ zone in the aggregate table. At home, Godoy Cruz are on five without defeat, winning three and drawing two. Captain Pier Barrios returns after serving a two-game suspension.

Sarmiento are still finding trouble in the league. Last time out, the team registered a disappointing 0-0 home stalemate against Lanus in a boring game. As a result, El Verde are winless in their last six league matches, drawing four and losing two, making it 14 points in the Liga Profesional. This campaign places them just five points above CA Central Cordoba, who occupy the relegation spot in the aggregate table. On away turf, Sarmiento managed a single point across their last four matches. Playmaker Nicolas Gaitan continues to recover from a muscle problem.

Sarmiento are really struggling lately with only 1 goal scored in their last 6 games and not having veteran Nicolas Gaitan definitely doesn’t help them. Godoy Cruz has improved lately, especially at home and they should win here.

Estudiantes – Platense

Estudiantes are now going through a difficult moment of form. Last time out, the team succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 away defeat to Talleres following a poor performance. The defending champions are now on four league matches without a win, drawing one and losing three in that time, which keeps them on 16 points after 13 rounds of Liga Profesional action. Estudiantes took nine of those points at Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi as a product of two victories, three stalemates and one loss. Santiago Ascacibar remains out due to a muscle problem.

Platense deflated their performance in matchday 13 and succumbed to an unexpected 2-1 home defeat to San Lorenzo in a hard-fought game. That result represented their third loss across their last five matches in the league, along with a single win and one stalemate in the process. El Calamar remain on 15 points in the Liga Profesional, which means they remain unable to escape from relegation threats so far. On a positive note, Platense won three of their last four away matches, losing only once in that spell.

Five of the last six Estudiantes games had at least two goals, same as Platense in three of their last four. They’ve struggled lately but at home they are still a dangerous team so I have to go here for this very low totals line.

Rosario Central – Talleres

Rosario Central put up a good fight against Boca Juniors two weeks ago, but they succumbed to an undeserved 2-1 away defeat to Boca Juniors in a hard-fought game. The side succumbed to their second loss across their last three league games (winning only once in that spell), which left them on 18 points in 13 rounds and far away from the continental spots in the aggregate table. On a positive note, Central lost only one of their last seven home matches in domestic action, along with three victories and three draws. Goalkeeper Jorge Broun and right back Emanuel Coronel succumbed to different injuries and will miss out, as well as Facundo Mallo and Carlos Quintana.

Under interim boss Mariano Levisman, Talleres recovered from their slump in the last league and beat Estudiantes 1-0 at home thanks to a strike from Ruben Botta in the first half. La T are still fighting for the Liga Profesional title, accumulating 23 points (just four behind Velez Sarsfield) after losing only one of the last seven in this competition (winning two and drawing four). In addition, the side returned to the Copa Libertadores’ zone in the aggregate table. On a sorry note, Talleres remain winless in their last four domestic matches on the road, with two stalemates and two losses. Last weekend, Talleres lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw against Boca Juniors in the Copa Argentina round of 16, with coach Alexander Medina starting his second spell at the club.

Rosario Central should be in trouble here without their goalkeeper Jorge Broun, and three of their four starting defenders, especially Facundo Mallo and Carlos Quintana. They still have their attacking power that allowed them to score at least once in six of their last seven games, so I’ll go for the OVER as I can see both teams scoring here.

Argentinos Jrs – Newell’s

Argentinos Juniors continue to find difficulties in the league. Last time out, the team conceded in the 90th minute and succumbed to a heartbreaking 1-0 away defeat to Gimnasia LP. El Bicho remain on 14 points in the Liga Profesional after five league games without a win, drawing two and losing three without even scoring, a streak that dropped them out of the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate table. On a positive note, Argentinos lost only one of their last 15 home matches in league action, winning ten and drawing four in that time.

Newell’s Old Boys failed to confirm their improvements last time out, when they ended up drawing 0-0 against Belgrano at home in a boring game. As a result, La Lepra extended their winless run to seven league matches (four stalemates and three defeats), making it just 13 points in as many matches of Liga Profesional action and staying far away from the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate table. In addition, Newell’s took just two points from the last nine on offer as the visiting side. Playmaker Ever Banega returns after overcoming a muscle problem, but goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos succumbed to a similar injury and will miss out.

Argentinos has been really poor lately but they are still strong at home with ten wins and just one defeat in the last 15 matches. Newell’s has been just awful with no goals scored in their last five, their goalkeeper is injured and they should struggle here.
