Everton vs Estudiantes
Everton advanced to the Copa Libertadores’ third qualifying round after their 1-0 away defeat at Monagas in Venezuela last week (they had won 3-0 at home). On Saturday, the team registered a 1-1 home draw against Curico Unido in the league (even though coach Francisco Meneghini fielded his best possible XI) to make it three competitive games without a win (two stalemates and one defeat). Los Ruleteros are occupying 10th place in the Chilean league table out of 16 teams, with six points in five games so far. On a positive note, Everton have been unbeaten in their last three home matches, winning two and drawing one.
Estudiantes turned the aggregate result around in the second round last Wednesday, when they beat Chile’s Audax Italiano 2-0 at home to make it 2-1 on aggregate. On Sunday, boss Ricardo Zielinski rotated most of his players and the side still had enough to earn a 1-1 away draw at Velez Sarsfield. That result means El Pincha continue at the top of the Copa Liga Profesional’s group B table with 13 points from 15 on offer. In fact, Estudiantes won five and drew one of their seven competitive matches this season. On away turf, they registered one victory, one draw and one defeat.
I expect a tight game here, with Estudiantes being clearly the better team but not in a rush to win considering they still have the 2nd leg at home next week.
