Lanus vs Banfield

Lanus are almost out of the race for the title after their 4-2 away defeat to Boca Juniors last Saturday, which represented their third loss across the last four games (only beating CA Central Cordoba at home in the process). The team remain on 26 points, seven behind leaders River Plate, and also are still out of the Copa Libertadores’ spots in the 2021 aggregate table. On a positive note, El Granate lost only one of their last six home matches in this competition, winning three and drawing two. Winger Lautaro Acosta is expected to be available for the derby after overcoming his muscle issues.

Banfield come to the derby after a 1-0 home defeat to River Plate last Saturday, which dropped down to the 23rd place in the Liga Profesional’s table on 14 points. The team claimed a single victory across their last 12 league matches (drawing six and losing five). This poor campaign leaves them without any important aims to attempt for the remainder of the season as the team are already qualified for the Copa Sudamericana in 2022. On away turf, Banfield are on six winless matches, having drawn five and lost one since beating Union Santa Fe in round three. Left back Gustavo Canto succumbed to a muscle injury and won’t feature. Playmaker Jesus Datolo will miss out again, this time due to a muscle problem.

Lanus might not be in their best form but this is a huge derby for both teams and I can’t imagine them losing at home against this very irregular Banfield.

Gimnasia vs Newell’s

Gimnasia LP secured a valuable point on their visit to Independiente last Monday, when they settled for a 1-1 away draw. El Lobo succumbed to a single defeat in their last five league matches, winning two and drawing two, to make it 18 points in the Liga Profesional. On a sorry note, the team dropped down to the 20th spot in the relegation table (level with Huracan and above other five teams). Gimnasia lost only one of their eight home matches this season, winning three and drawing four.

Newell’s Old Boys suffered their sixth defeat across the last ten league games (along with a single win and three draws) last time out, when they lost 2-1 to Velez Sarsfield at home. The team continue performing a poor campaign, having earned 16 points in 15 games (and only one of those was grabbed in the last three rounds). On the road, La Lepra managed a single victory so far (at Lanus 2-1 in round 12), with the other games in this tournament ending in three draws and three defeats.

Newell’s has conceded at least once in their last 10 league games but also scored in 8 of them, and I think this trend will continue this week against a Gimnasia that has scored in 3 of their last 4 games.
