Detailed Analysis
Banfield vs Belgrano
Banfield put up a good fight on their visit to River Plate last Saturday, but they couldn’t stop the hosts’ offensive power and ended up losing 3-1 away. That result represented their third defeat across the last five league matches, along with a single win and one draw. El Taladro remain on 21 points in the Liga Profesional, now just eight points above the relegation zone in the aggregate table. Banfield won two of their last three at home, losing only once in that spell. Winger Juan Alvarez continues to recover from his knee injury and will miss out on Wednesday.
Belgrano played one of their worst games in 2024 last Saturday, when they lost to Defensa y Justicia 2-1 at home after conceding the winner just four minutes before the final whistle. As a result, El Pirata extended their winless run to four league games (two stalemates and two defeats). They remain on 26 points in the Liga Profesional, which keeps them ten points above the relegation zone in the aggregate table. Furthermore, Belgrano won only one of their last nine as the visiting side, drawing five and losing three.
Banfield are one of the very few teams in this league whose games have goals lately: they’ve scored in every one of their last 8 games (10 goals in total) while conceding 11 in the same amount of games so I’ll go for the OVER here as I can see both teams scoring.
Boca vs Godoy Cruz
Boca Juniors are clearly living one of their worst seasons in the 21st century. Last Sunday, the team succumbed to an unexpected 1-0 away at Lanus following a poor performance, which means El Xeneize are without a win in their last three in this competition, drawing one and losing two. Following that streak, they remain on 25 points in the Liga Profesional, which keeps them seven points behind the last Copa Sudamericana berth in the aggregate table. Boca lost only one of their last 19 home matches in domestic action, winning 12 and drawing six. Guillermo Fernandez has served his one-game suspension and is available.
Godoy Cruz fans will have felt frustrated last Thursday, when the team couldn’t hold onto their lead and ended up drawing 1-1 against Atletico Tucuman at home. However, El Tomba were able to extend their unbeaten run to six league games, winning two and drawing four to make it 28 points in the Liga Profesional. That campaign is enough for them to stay occupying one of the Copa Libertadores berths in the aggregate table. Daniel Oldra’s men lost only one of their last five as the visiting side (two victories and two draws). Winger Facundo Altamira remains sidelined. Coach Daniel Oldra would repeat the XI.
Boca are playing terribly lately. They looked completely clueless last weekend vs Lanus and although they’ve been better at home, a game against this tough Godoy Cruz should be a big challenge for them so I’ll take the visitors here.
Instituto vs River Plate
Instituto continue going through a difficult moment in league action. Last Sunday, the team showed a worrying version and ended up losing 2-0 away at Racing Club’s alternative XI. That result means La Gloria are now on three league games without a win (one stalemate and two defeats). Diego Dabove’s men remain on 29 points in the Liga Profesional, a very good campaign but not enough to return to the Copa Sudamericana zone in the aggregate table. On a positive note, Instituto lost only one of their last nine at home, winning five and drawing three. Coach Diego Dabove has a full squad to choose from on Wednesday.
River Plate returned to winning ways last Saturday following a convincing performance, which led them to beat Banfield 3-1 at home. El Millonario put an end to their four-match winless streak of three stalemates and one loss in league action to make it 30 points and keep their hope alive to fight for the title as they trail leaders Velez Sarsfield by nine with seven rounds to go. Besides, Marcelo Gallardo’s men remain into the Copa Libertadores’ zone in the aggregate table. River won only one of their last nine away matches in league action, drawing five and losing three. Striker Miguel Borja reached the yellow-card limit and is suspended. German Pezzella succumbed to a muscle problem and will miss out.
I’m still not convinced River is fully recovered despite their weekend win vs Banfield and they won’t have their top scorer Miguel Borja as well as their best defender German Pezzella so while Instituto has been too irregular, they are strong at home and I expect them to avoid a defeat.
