Rosario Central vs River

With striker Marco Ruben netting a hat-trick, Rosario Central managed to beat Colon 4-1 away last Thursday. Cristian Gonzalez’s men made it two consecutive victories in the Liga Profesional to accumulate 30 points in that table. The important thing is that they continue fighting for a ticket to the Copa Sudamericana 2022, trailing the last qualifying berth in the aggregate standings by only one point. Furthermore, El Canalla are on three consecutive victories at their own stadium, having beaten Patronato, Racing Club and Atletico Tucuman consecutively.

River Plate lifted their 37th league title (the first one since May 2014) last Thursday thanks to a solid 4-0 home success over Racing Club. With three rounds to go, Marcelo Gallardo’s men are the deserved champions after 17 league games unbeaten (14 wins and three draws) and accumulating 52 points, 12 more than second-placed Defensa y Justicia and Talleres. On the road, El Millonario are on eight matches without defeat in this competition, having won six and drawn two.

River are already the champions and they should be relaxed but still dangerous against this Rosario Central that won’t have their goalkeeper and must win to climb back into the Copa Sudamericana zone, so I have to expect a very open game here.

Argentinos Jrs vs Gimnasia

Argentinos Juniors are now on five league games without a win (having taken only two points in that time) following their devastating 2-0 away defeat at Velez Sarsfield last Tuesday. El Bicho continue producing an irregular campaign, accumulating 26 points in 22 matches, and continue wasting opportunities of approaching the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate table (they are now trailing next opponents, who occupy the last qualifying berth, by four points). To make matters worse, Argentinos won only one of their last four home matches in this competition, drawing one and losing two. Centre back Miguel Torren is suspended after seeing a red card at Velez Sarsfield.

Gimnasia LP are improving game after game. Last Tuesday, they managed to beat Talleres 5-2 at home in an entertaining encounter. El Lobo registered their fifth victory across the last eight league games, drawing two and losing only one. Following this positive streak, they made it 34 points in the league table and climbed into one of the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate standings. Furthermore, Gimnasia are unbeaten in their last five away matches, having claimed four victories and one draw in that span.

Gimnasia should be the more motivated team here as they are fighting for a place in Copa Sudamericana, plus they are in much better form so I expect them not to lose here.

Defensa y Justicia vs Colon

Defensa y Justicia continue to improve as the season progresses. On Wednesday, they claimed an easy 4-0 away success at Atletico Tucuman to make it nine league matches unbeaten (having won eight and drawn one). Following this remarkable streak, the team climbed into second spot in the Liga Profesional’s table on 40 points and also hold onto their Copa Sudamericana spot in the aggregate standings, which seemed unthinkable a few months ago.

After two consecutive league successes, Colon returned to losing ways last Thursday, when they were beaten by Rosario Central 4-1 at home after a worrying performance. However, the team remain producing a remarkable campaign, with 35 points in the Liga Profesional and also occupying the fourth place in the 2021 aggregate table. On away turf, Eduardo Dominguez’s men grabbed 14 of those points, having registered four victories, two draws and five defeats in the current competition.

Defensa are in superb form and looking for to secure a Copa Sudamericana place today, while Colon plays for nothing so I expect the hosts to continue their great run.
