November 19, 2021 – Argentine Primera Division Tip Previews

Talleres – Velez Sarsfield

Talleres don’t give up on their fight for the title. Two weeks ago, they managed a valuable 2-0 away success at Godoy Cruz through goals from Rafael Perez and Juan Cruz Komar to make it 39 points in the league table (seven behind leaders River Plate). After three league games unbeaten (two wins and one draw), the team also opened a five-point gap over the first non-Copa Libertadores berth in the aggregate table, occupied by Lanus. Furthermore, Talleres have been almost perfect at home in this competition, registering seven victories, one draw and one loss.

Velez Sarsfield returned to winning ways two weeks ago, when they showed improvements to beat San Lorenzo 2-1 at home through a brace from Lucas Janson. Thanks to that success, El Fortin took a big step towards securing their ticket to the Copa Libertadores 2022 (they are sitting in second spot of the aggregate table). Having lost only one of the last 14 league matches (along with nine successes and four draws), Mauricio Pellegrino’s men are fourth-placed in the Liga Profesional on 34 points. On away turf, Velez lost only one of their last six, having won three and drawn two in that spell.

Velez is a very good team but I can’t understand why Talleres odds are so high so I’m going with the hosts here.

Argentinos Jrs – Godoy Cruz

Argentinos Juniors are struggling at the moment. Last time out, they settled for a 1-1 away draw at Huracan, which means the team won only one of their last six league matches (along with one stalemate and four defeats). That negative run means they earned 25 points in 20 rounds and also places them two points behind the last Copa Sudamericana berth in the 2021 aggregate table. At home, El Bicho managed 14 points from 27 on offer following four victories, two draws and three losses.

Godoy Cruz dropped down to the 24th place in the relegation table following their 2-0 home defeat to Talleres in round 20. The team are deflating their performance lately, having won only one of their last seven matches in league action (along with three draws and three defeats). That negative run means El Tomba remain on 26 points in the Liga Profesional’s table. Furthermore, Godoy Cruz are on three away matches without a win, with one draw and two losses since beating Independiente 4-1 in September.

They’ve both been so irregular lately that I expect them both not to take many risks and be happy with playing a closed game.
