Godoy Cruz vs Platense

Godoy Cruz put an end to their four-game winless streak in league action (one draw and three losses) last Saturday, when they thrashed Patronato 3-0 away. Diego Flores’ men made it 30 points in the league standings and also opened a five-point gap over the bottom place of the relegation table (where they are sitting in the 23rd place, having leapfrogged Sarmiento last weekend). On a sorry note, El Tomba are on two consecutive defeats at Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, having lost to Talleres and Estudiantes.

With striker Matias Tissera in superb form (he netted a hat-trick), Platense managed to beat Huracan 4-2 at home last Monday to break a three-match winless streak of one draw and two defeats in league action. Following this victory, the team made it 27 points and also leapfrogged two other clubs (including their last opponents) to climb into 19th place of the relegation table. On a sorry note, El Calamar grabbed only one point across their last three away matches (since beating Racing Club 1-0 in October).

Not much to play for either side so I expect them to play an open game with goals.

Sarmiento vs Talleres

Sarmiento put up a good fight away at San Lorenzo last Tuesday, but they ended up losing 1-0 in an uneventful game. As a result, the team are winless in their last five league matches, with one draw and four defeats in that spell. Having managed 24 points in 23 rounds in this tournament, they are now occupying the penultimate spot of the relegation table, level with Aldosivi and only above Patronato. At home, Sarmiento won only one of their last four games, drawing one and losing two.

Talleres returned to winning ways last Saturday, when they beat Aldosivi 2-0 at home thanks to goals from Nahuel Tenaglia and Diego Valoyes. Alexander Medina’s men continue performing an excellent campaign: they made it 43 points in the Liga Profesional after losing only one of their last six league games (along with three victories and two draws). Therefore, they remain third-placed in the aggregate table. On a sorry note, Talleres managed a single victory across their last five away matches, drawing one and losing three.
Talleres is obviously the better team, but they will play the Copa Argentina final midweek and I can’t imagine them being very focused on this match.

Lanus vs Rosario Central

Lanus wasted another big chance of approaching the Copa Libertadores’ places last Monday, when they lost 3-1 at Racing Club despite having taken the first lead. The team are without a win in their last four league games (two draws and two losses), which means they remain on 36 points in this competition and are now five points behind the last Libertadores’ spot in the aggregate table. El Granate are on five matches unbeaten at their own stadium, but they won only one of those and drew the last four.

Rosario Central couldn’t hold onto their 2-0 lead and ended up settling for a 2-2 home draw against the recently-crowned champions River Plate. Striker Marco Ruben netted a brace and became the club’s topscorer in the professional era. El Canalla made it three consecutive Liga Profesional games unbeaten (two wins and one draw) to accumulate 31 points in the league table, but failed to climb into one of the Copa Sudamericana spots in the aggregate rankings (now trailing Union Santa Fe, who occupy the last qualifying berth, by one point).

Lanus has already secured one of the Copa Sudamericana places, Rosario Central needs to win or their chances could be almost gone, so I expect an open game here.
