Peñarol (Uruguay) – Sporting Cristal (Peru)
Penarol produced a remarkable performance last Wednesday and it was enough to beat Sporting Cristal 3-1 away, which means they would advance to the semi-finals unless they lose 3-0 or worse. On Saturday, the team also managed to beat CA Progreso 1-0 at home to remain third-placed in the Uruguayan Torneo Apertura, six points behind Plaza Colonia (who have already become champions with one round to go). They are on five games unbeaten in all competitions, winning four wins and one draw. At home, Penarol lost only one of the last 14, along with ten victories and three stalemates.
Sporting Cristal are almost out of the Copa Sudamericana following their 3-1 home defeat to Penarol: they will need to score at least three strikes to keep their hope alive. On Saturday, they lost 1-0 at home against Cesar Vallejo: Roberto Mosquera’s men are producing an irregular campaign in the Peruvian league, with eight points in five matches. The team claimed only one win in their last five competitive matches, drawing two and losing two. On a positive note, Cristal are unbeaten in their last six on the road: four successes and two stalemates since losing to Sao Paulo in the Copa Libertadores in May.
Peñarol won easily the first leg at Peru, and they should take this one as well to confirm their place in the semifinals.
