Shearer pushes out Newcastle relegation odds
April 1, 2009 by Ben Filed under: Football
Following the announcement that veteran Alan Shearer has become the new Newcastle manager, leading Irish Bookmaker has lengthened the odds of Newcastle to be relegated from 11/10 to 6/5.
In the bookie’s eyes news of Alan Shearer’s appointment as Newcastle manager until the end of the season has proved a welcome boost to their relegation battle and the odds of the club’s survival have also improved from 4/6 to 8/13 – although clearly Shearer still has it all to do.
Other Paddy Power bets on the shock appointment include 9/2 that Shearer’s first win comes in the home game against Chelsea this weekend and 4/1 Newcastle scrape home this season in 17th place. The Shearer effect has already improved their chances against Chelsea with the bookie cutting the odds for a win from 5/1 to 9/2.
Should Shearer fail to save his former club from the drop the Geordies are 13/2 to win next season’s Championship whilst its 8/1 Shearer fails to win them another match in the league this season.
Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Shearer clearly has nothing to lose but the boost to morale alone could be enough to push the club over the line to safety – although the betting suggests he’s got one hell of a job on his hands.”
Paddy Power’s Shearer Betting:
6/5 Newcastle to be relegated (from 11/10)
8/13 Newcastle not to be relegated (from 4/6)
4/1 Newcastle player to do the Shearer one-armed salute after scoring a goal v Chelsea on Saturday
4/11 Shearer to be Newcastle manager at the start of next season
13/2 Newcastle to win The Championship next season
7/2 Newcastle to win a trophy next season (FA Cup, Carling Cup, Championship, Premier League only)
10/1 Boro & Sunderland to get relegated this season

The stand out bet for me is the
4/1 Newcastle player to do the Shearer one-armed salute after scoring a goal v Chelsea on Saturday
Looks like you are getting 4/1 on a Newcastle player to score. I remember when William Hill offer 100/1 on Bellamy scoring against Barcelona and celebrating with a golf club swing. He scored and William Hill had to pay out at 100/1.
