Twenty seven runners are set to line-up for Saturday’s Ayr Gold Cup and defending champion Advanced still heads the betting at 9-1 with William Hill, along with the Karl Burke-trained Confuchias.

Kevin Ryan’s five-year-old has not won since taking the six-furlong event a year ago, but has acquitted himself admirably in his last two races’ running Look Busy to a length in his last start in Listed company.

Portland Handicap winner Hogmaneigh will be attempting a notable double on Saturday and Hills make Stewart Williams’s charge a 10-1 chance to emulate the great Lochsong by completing a follow-up in the famous Scottish race.

At Newbury, Ask the Butler is quoted at 5-1 to achieve a three-timer by taking the John Smiths Stakes on Saturday, along with co-favourite Rose Street. Both the front two in the betting will carry five pound penalties for their recent wins, along with Mick Channon’s Siberian Tiger (12-1), and Geoff Swinbank’s Prince Kalamoun (12-1).

Kate Miller, spokeswoman for Hills, said: Punters have definitely got a couple of decent handicaps to get their teeth into at the weekend. Unsurprisingly with the ground conditions, Valery Borzov has been very well supported in the Gold Cup, whilst Ask the Butler’s recent profile has ensured that punters want him on their side too.”
