Premiership Handicaps 2009 – 2010
August 4, 2009 by Ben Filed under: Football
With just over a week left to go until the Premiership kicks off I am going to have a look at the Premiership Handicap Race. This gives a good idea of what the bookies think will happen. All teams are given a handicap apart from the team that the bookie thinks will win it. Well, they do get a handicap but its +0. Everyone else gets a handicap. At the end of the season the actual points and handicaps are added together and the winner is the one with the most points.

From the handicaps we can see that they expect Manchester United to win by 1 point above Chelsea, 4 points above Liverpool, 9 points ahead of Arsenal and 14 points above their Eastlands rivals. Birmingham, Burnley and Hull are most likely to go down with the biggest handicaps.
At the start every team had odds of 15/1. The weight of money and team news have changed the odds. You can see that Sunderland are only 12/1 now in the handicap market. Looks like Paddypower have got that one a little wrong in the view in the punters eyes.
Traditionally, the handicap market has been won by a team that does a lot better than expected from the lower part of the table. Its much more likely that say, Birmingham over perform by 10 points than it is say Chelsea.
So what you think? Sunderland maybe but at 12/1 the value may have gone. Man City may have a chance. If they break top 4 its unlikely that the are going to be more than 15 points behind Man U.
