Everton v Newcastle United, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:00pm
October 4, 2008 by Ben Filed under: Football
Everton welcome Newcastle to Goodison on Saturday, with both teams still looking for the spark to really ignite their season. Although Everton have not had their most impressive start to the season, their games have certainly been entertaining, and have seen plenty of goals. That will mean nothing to Toffee fans following last weekend’s defeat in the Merseyside derby, as two goals from Fernando Torres gave Liverpool bragging rights in the city once again. Tim Cahill’s dismissal in the 80th minute capped a dismal day for Everton, and they will look to this game as a chance to gain a much needed first home win of the season.
The turmoil surrounding Newcastle continued this week, as owner Mike Ashley lowered his asking price for the club, prompting a host of foreign investors to stake their interest. With new manager Joe Kinnear only expected to see out the month of October in his current role, there appears to be no end to the uncertainness surrounding the club until a new owner is found. This unease has been on display on the pitch, with four consecutive defeats damaging what had been a promising start in their opening two games. However, recent 2-1 home defeats to Spurs in the cup, and Hull in the league, have sent the Toon into the lower reaches of the Premiership. It will be interesting to see whether Kinnear can have any effect on the team, or if he is merely just a stop gap until new owners signal a return for Kevin Keegan.
