Sheffield’s Jessica Ennis early favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the year

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Jessica Ennis is the current 4/1 favourite with William Hill to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year after annihilating the competition in Austria. After being out with injury for 7 weeks, she returned to the heptathlon just 2 weeks ago.

Andy Murray is 5/1 having already reached a Grand Slam final this year and David Haye is 6/1 ahead of his bout with Wladimir Klitschko in July. Sebastian Vettel looks uncatchable in the F1 Drivers Championship and Lewis Hamilton has slipped in the betting for BBC Sports Personality of the Year , because of this from 5/1 to 8/1.

Ennis does look like a good early favourite but it depends on what others do. If Haye beats Klitschko in style then I can see him being made instant favourite. There is still half the year to go too, so plenty of time for things to chance.

“In a year without a major football tournament, the betting for BBC Sports Personality of the Year is always incredibly tight. Looking forward to the rest of year, there are still many sporting events to come and many more sportsmen and women who can perform their way into the running,”said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

It does not seem that long ago when Ryan Giggs won BBC sports personality of the year. The 66/1 outsider ended up pipping odds on favourite Jenson Button to the race.

Irish Bookmaker, Paddypower have released the odds for the 2010 race. Current favourite is Andy Murray, surely with the expectation that he will win something this year. All bets will be off if he wins Wimbledon but thats a big if. At 2/1, you are probably best off just betting on him to win Wimbledon straight.

This may be of interest to you who watch this. Looking at the line up I have no interest in this.
