Spurs odds for relegation

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Tottenham Hotspur are now just 10/3 with bookie Paddy Power for relegation this season following their latest defeat to Stoke City.

Spurs, who were 100/1 outsiders for the drop pre-season, have seen their relegations odds drastically tumble as they lurch from one league loss to another. The Lilywhites had been 7/1 prior to their match against Stoke but the damaging loss to the relegation favourites has forced bookies to take drastic action.

Newcastle v Manchester City, Monday, 8:00pm

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Newcastle host Manchester City in the final Premiership game of the weekend, with an air of uncertainty still hanging over the Tyneside club. With Joe Kinnear in temporary charge and the identity of new owners still uncertain, the club is in limbo while it waits to see what the future will bring. That future did look a little brighter after their last Premiership game against Everton, a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park that would have brought some hope for the season.

Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur, Sunday, Sky Sports 1,4:00pm

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The bottom two meet at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday in a game both teams will see as a chance to kick start their season. Following Tottenham’s worst start to a season in 96 years, manager Juande Ramos has seen the pressure build as some within the club call for his head after less than a year in charge. The 1-0 defeat to Hull City last time out at White Hart Lane could have been the tipping point for the Spurs board, but they have stuck with the man who guided Spurs to a Carling Cup victory within four months of arriving. They are in desperate need of a result, although they are once again short of striking options following an injury to Roman Pavlyuchenko, and could find it hard going against a workman like Stoke side.

Manchester United v West Brom, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 5:30pm

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Manchester United have started to find their form in recent weeks after a slow start, and unsurprisingly this has coincided with the return of Ronaldo from injury, and the addition of Dimitar Berbatov up front. Since returning in the Carling Cup, Ronaldo has scored twice as United have recorded four straight wins to put their title challenge back on track. Berbatov took some time to find his feet at Old Trafford, but scored twice in their last Champions League game against Aalborg and will be looking to open his Premiership account for United. (more…)

Middlesbrough v Chelsea, Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 12:45pm

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Middlesbrough host Chelsea in the first Premiership game of the weekend, with both sides looking to build on relatively strong starts. Chelsea have taken advantage of title rivals Manchester United’s indifferent early form to open up a six point gap between the two, and will want to extend that before United kick of in the later game on Saturday. They face a Boro side who have made a promising start to the season, but who are looking to regain some consistency following recent results. Chelsea were impressive in their last outing against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, a game which some believed could pose a threat to their long unbeaten home record.

Odds on Beckham to Play for Man City

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Manchester City are the 3/1 favourite with bookie Paddy Power to be the Premier League club David Beckham plays for first this season as he looks to maintain his fitness for international football.

With LA Galaxy’s season drawing to a close Beckham will need regular football if he wishes to add to his 107 caps for Fabio Capello’s England team and the midfielder is said to be looking for a Premier League team to play for. PaddyPower Ireland vs Cyprus

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland are red hot 1/3 favourites with Paddy Power to make it third time lucky against Cyprus at Croke Park on Wednesday.

The boys in green will be hoping to erase the recent memory of a draw and a loss against the up and coming Cypriots. A home win is vital to qualification, which at the moment remains unlikely according to the bookies who rate Ireland odds on at 1/3 not to qualify for the World Cup and 21/10 to get there.
