Following the shock resignation of Harry Redknapp as the Portsmouth manager, bookmakers William Hill have installed Tony Adams as their 2/1 favourite to be the next permanent Portsmouth manager. Hills are 1/8 that Harry is still the Spurs manager on day one of the next Premiership season and 9/2 that he is not. But Portsmouth are 4/5 to finish above Spurs (10/11) this year.

West Ham United v Arsenal, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 4:00pm

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Arsenal travel across London to face West Ham as they look to close the gap on the top two. Confidence will be high in the Gunners camp following Tuesday’s 5-2 romp against Fenerbache in Istanbul. Cesc Fabregas was in outstanding form, as he laid on the first two goals for Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott, and there were further impressive attacking performances from some unlikely sources. Midfielder Abou Diaby had made it three before defender Alex Song thundered home a volley from another Fabregas free kick. Welsh youngster Aaron Ramsey then rounded off the rout in the last minute with a great strike from outside the box, as Arsenal put on another brilliant attacking performance. (more…)

Chelsea v Liverpool, Sunday, Sky Sports 1, 1:30pm

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The Premiership’s top two meet on Sunday, with both eager to get a good result as Arsenal and Manchester United begin to hit top gear. Phil Scolari’s influence on the Chelsea side was evident last week in their 5-0 stroll over Middlesbrough, and the contrast in style with former coach Jose Mourinho was striking. They had the game sewn up shortly after half time when Juliano Belletti’s awesome 30 yard strike, added to Salomon Kalou’s 14th minute goal, made it 2-0 to the Blues.

Blackburn Rovers v Middlesbrough, Saturday, Setanta Sports 1, 5:30pm

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Two sides who have had a mixed start to the season meet at Ewood Park when Blackburn take on Middlesbrough. Blackburn have been impressive in victories against Everton, Newcastle and Fulham, but in between have suffered heavy defeats to West Ham and Arsenal. Boss Paul Ince will want a bit more consistency from his side, and will be looking to striker Roque Santa Cruz to add to the two goals he has scored so far this year.

Sunderland v Newcastle, Saturday, Sky Sports 1, 12:45pm

Friday, October 24th, 2008

One of the most passionate and keenly fought derby’s in the world of football takes place again on Saturday lunch time when Newcastle visit the Stadium of Light to face arch rivals Sunderland. Newcastle will be looking to continue their mini-revival under Joe Kinnear, as they have halted their recent slide with two consecutive draws. The 2-2 draw against Manchester City on Monday was nearly the win they have been searching for since August, with only a Stephen Ireland goal four minutes from time denying them victory.

Friday, October 24th, 2008

There is a packed weekend of quality racing ahead, as Doncaster holds the Racing Post Trophy on Saturday, while over at in America the Breeders Cup spectacular visits Santa Anita in California for this year’s festival.

A large field will assemble at Doncaster on Saturday for the Racing Post Trophy at 3:35pm, with Jukebox Jury and Masterofthehorse currently heading the betting at 3/1 each at VCbet and BGbet respectively. Horses Breeders’ Cup Betting Tips

Friday, October 24th, 2008
This weekend’s Breeders Cup from Santa Anita sees some familiar names in action, including Duke Of Marmalade and Henrythenavigator, winners of nine Group 1 races between them this season. But can they beat the Yanks in their own backyard?

In previous years, our turf horses have struggled to win on dirt but the new synthetic surface being used this year should ensure a more level playing field. Take the Classic for example, which on dirt would have been a penalty kick for the alleged ‘greatest horse in the world’ Curlin. He’s still bet365’s 7/4 favourite, but all three of our horses, Henrythenavigator (6/1), Raven’s Pass (7/1) and Duke Of Marmalade (8/1) must have chances, with slight preference for ‘Henry’, whose turn of foot may prove decisive.

Aston Villa v Ajax, Betting Thursday, Five, 8:15pm

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Aston Villa entertain the four times European Cup champions on Thursday in their opening group game. Villa have made a solid start to the Premiership, and currently sit sixth after Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Portsmouth. They easily overcome Bulgarian side Litex Lovech 4-2 over two qualifying legs, with the tie effectively over in the first leg after Villa’s 3-1 win. They have a difficult looking group, with Hamburg joining Ajax and Villa in the hunt for top spot in Group F, and Martin O’Neill’s side will be looking to get off to a good start in such a quality group. Ajax also easily came through their qualifying stage 6-1, and will be one of the favourites for the competition, despite the strength of the sides competing for it this year. (more…)

Udinese v Totenham, Thursday, Five, 6:10pm

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Tottenham’s awful start to the Premiership season continued last Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by Stoke, in a game which saw Stoke also miss a last minute penalty and Spurs finish with nine men. Boss Juande Ramos is now under tremendous pressure, and once again will welcome the break that the UEFA Cup has given his side this year. Their only victory of the campaign came in this competition a month ago, and Ramos will view this as a springboard for better things. They will not have an easy task when they visit the Stadio Friuli however, as Udinese currently sit second in Seire A, just two points behind Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan. (more…)

Chelsea v Roma, Wednesday, Sky Sports Xtra, 7:45pm

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Chelsea welcome Roma to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday fresh from their 5-0 thrashing of Middlesbrough on Saturday. That game was perhaps the clearest indication yet of the difference new boss Luis Felipe Scolari has brought to the Blues, as they continued to go forward even after the game was won. This is in contrast to the way former Blues boss Jose Mourinho set out his team, and is more in keeping with the way owner Roman Abromovich wants to see the side play. (more…)

Atletico Madrid v Liverpool, Wednesday, Sky Sports 2, 7:45pm

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The top two in Group D meet on Wednesday in Madrid, although only after protests from both sides. UEFA had originally wanted the game to be played at a neutral venue as punishment for Atletico fan’s behaviour in their game against Marseille earlier this month.
